Five Coffee Brewing Tips

Great coffee at home doesn't need fancy gear — just a few good habits. Here are five simple tips that will make a noticeable difference in your next cup.

1. Start with fresh beans

Buy whole beans roasted within the last few weeks and store them in an airtight container away from light and heat. Freshness is the single biggest factor in flavor.

2. Grind right before brewing

Ground coffee loses aroma within minutes. Grind just before you brew, and match the grind size to your method: coarse for French press, medium for drip, fine for espresso.

3. Measure your ratio

A good starting point is 1 gram of coffee to 16 grams of water. Use a kitchen scale for consistency, then adjust to taste.

4. Mind the water temperature

Aim for 90–96°C (195–205°F) — just off the boil. Water that's too hot extracts bitterness; too cool and the coffee tastes sour and thin.

5. Use clean, filtered water

Coffee is about 98% water, so off-tastes in your tap water end up in your cup. Filtered water and a regularly cleaned brewer keep flavors bright and clear.
